Gov. Mario Cuomo is President Clinton's first choice to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Byron White, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
Others are in the running for the nomination, and the president hasn't made up his mind, but the 60-year-old Democrat leads the pack, the paper said.Clinton frequently has said that Cuomo has the qualities he wants on the Supreme Court. "He is a legal scholar who also understands the impact of the law on real people's lives," Clinton said last year.
The president has been pressured to appoint a woman or a minority; however, White House aides believe the president will have a chance to appoint at least one or two more people to the court, the Journal said.
