A Logan resident has asked a judge to remove Richard Thomas from the Logan Municipal Council.

Edwin Allred said he presented a sworn statement to 1st District Judge Gordon Lowe Monday, petitioning the judge to remove Thomas from office because of his involvement in the purchase of stolen jewelry from a 15-year-old boy last August. The statement said that on three separate days, Thomas, who owns a jewelry store in downtown Logan, paid the youth $110 for jewelry with a total value of $1,180.

The Logan Police Department investigated a stolen jewelry complaint that led to Thomas Jewelers Inc. Thomas was later charged with possession of stolen property. He pleaded no contest in 1st Circuit Court Jan. 12, and received a $300 fine.

Allred said the state code says any taxpayer can petition for the removal of an elected official.

"I firmly believe that because of his actions, Mr. Thomas no longer deserves the public trust," Allred said.

Allred said the judge would turn the petition over to Cache County Attorney Gary McKean.
