A memorial commemorating the mudslide that devastated part of the city a decade ago got a favorable reception this week by the Farmington City Council.
Former council member Marda Dillree suggested the monument be included in the trail system the city and Lagoon are building along Farmington Creek, part of the area inundated in mud and water in May of 1983.Dillree said the idea came to her as she was jogging through the area, enjoying the wooded creekside.
While the memory of the disaster may not be pleasant for people whose homes were devastated, Dillree said the event pulled the community together. The volunteers who responded and community spirit engendered by the disaster should be remembered, she told the council.
Lagoon, which had crews on duty for 24-hour stretches during the flooding to pull debris from Farmington Creek as it raged through the amusement park, will help with the project, Dillree said.
The council agreed the proposal is a good one and could be tied into the city's celebration of the Utah Centennial.
