I just wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for all of the fine articles Lois Collins has written in the Deseret News about social services in recent months. Most recently her article "Few options for mentally disabled graduates" was excellent.
In recent years, it has been particularly difficult to work in social services because there is so much unmet human need. The issue is compounded by high expectations for services, low allocations from the Legislature, rising costs of everything and media attention to the perceived negative aspects of our system. Lois' articles contribute a sense of balance to the picture. They portray the other side of the story, point out roadblocks and emphasize that we do have good points as well as our share of problems. Thanks for keeping the community informed. I am certain if the general public had a better understanding of the problems and issues some people face on a daily basis, they would be more supportive of social services.
