Jurist dies at 81 U.S. District Judge James Parsons, the first black appointed to the federal bench, died Saturday at age 81 after a long illness. Parsons was named a federal judge for life in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. He retired from active trial work last year, but remained involved.
