The owner of a Salt Lake company that researches and develops new medical products has been named state science adviser by Gov. Mike Leavitt.

Suzanne Winters is the owner and president of MC2, Membranes and Coatings Consultants Inc., and vice president over research and development at Protein Solutions Inc., another Salt Lake company.Her other experience includes a six-month stint as senior materials scientist at Symbion Inc., the company that marketed the Jarvik artificial heart.

"We are fortunate to have a scientist of Dr. Winters' caliber take this position," Leavitt said. "I am particularly pleased with her strong interest in science education and her desire to attract more females to science."

A science education program for students from kindergarten through high school is under development at Protein Solutions. Winters holds a patent and has a second pending.

She took over the job on Tuesday. Winters replaces former state science adviser Randy Moon, who has taken a position in the state Department of Natural Resources.

Winters holds a doctorate in pharmaceutics from the University of Utah and completed her bachelor's degree in biology at Ohio Wesleyan University. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
