The Democratic Party has abandoned plans to establish a nonprofit foundation to drum up support from Republicans, business leaders and others for President Clinton's health care reform package.
After providing a $100,000 "seed loan" to the organization, the Democratic National Committee decided the group never would be perceived as nonpartisan. Given that, DNC Chairman David Wilhelm said Thursday he decided it would best be run as an arm of the party. The National Health Care Campaign, run by Democratic activist Ceila Fischer, had planned to operate as a nonprofit foundation, which would allow it to seek unregulated donations from corporations, labor unions and others who supported Clinton's health care proposal.
