Hurrah for the people who have written letters in favor of the minuscule increase in sales tax to help out the arts in our community. In common with them, I certainly am not part of an elite, but I do like to go once in a while to one or another of the varied art type events which we are fortunate to have available.
Beauty should be, and can be, part of the life of everyone, the particular form depending on the needs and desires of the individual. Those who do not seek beauty in everyday living are missing a great deal of happiness they could have and which in truth is one of the few real "entitlements" of mankind.I am reminded of the simple old poem that suggests that if you have but two loaves, "sell one and with the dole buy hyacinths to feed thy soul."
The small arts tax is just a way to help provide the same thing - not only hyacinths but also paintings, ballet, symphony and other music, plays and other forms of beauty. Please vote for it. Then make sure you also seek out your share and enjoy the result. You'll get a lot more than you give.
