Ernest F. Mariani, 94, died peacefully in his sleep Thursday, July 8, 1993 of causes incident to age.

He was born in Gubbio, Italy, October 4, 1898 to Nazzareno and Maria Assunta Mariani. With his mother and sister, emigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1910 to join his father in their chosen new country. Married Eleanor Dozzi on February 17, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. She preceded him in death on April 15, 1980. He was a member of the St. Ambrose Parish. Mr. Mariani worked in the Carbon County Coal Mines during his teenage years. With working conditions very difficult, he came to Salt Lake City in 1920, opening a small grocery store. This was later expanded to wholesale Italian food products and in 1931 he started selling metal caps to the bottling industry. From this humble beginning Mr. Mariani expanded into the soft drink and brewery supply business. The company which carries his name, Ernest F. Mariani Company, now covers many states and foreign countries. He served on many civic organizations, a longtime Rotarian, member of the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Salt Lake Country Club where he served on the board of directors. His teachings of honesty, integrity, commitment and hard work will live through his family, business associates and friends.Survived by his daughter, Jeanne Mariani Kimball, son-in-law, Richard A. Kimball, and his son, Ernest D. Mariani, daughter-in-law, Isabel Mariani, all of Salt Lake City; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Pizza, Orinda, California. Preceded in death by his brother, Henry.

Friends may call Sunday, July 11, 1993 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East from 6-7:00 p.m. Vigil prayer service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 12, 1993 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church.
