Vietnam will host an international surfing competition in October at China Beach near Danang, where U.S. troops used to surf on "rest and recreation" trips during the Vietnam War, government officials said Tuesday.

About 60 top-class surfers will compete for prizes totaling $60,000 from Oct. 4 to 11, a spokesman for the sports and physical culture department said."The event is aimed at widening diplomatic relations, encouraging tourism and developing the sport of surfing in Vietnam," he said.

About 60 surfers from the United States, Australia, France, Spain, Japan, Brazil and other countries are expected to take part in the contest, sponsored by the government, Hong Kong promoters Sports Asia and the association of surfing professionals.
