A French gendarme holds the mouthpiece of his trumpet in his mouth while waiting for the start of the annual Bastille Day military parade Wednesday on the Champs Elysees in Paris. Gen. Philippe Morillon, sporting his U.N. peacekeeper's blue beret, received a hero's welcome during the parade for his defiance of the Serbs in war-torn Bosnia-Herzegovina. The parade, held to celebrate the fall of the Bastille prison that sparked the French Revolution in 1789, was dedicated this year to French troops serving as peacekeepers with the United Nations, and to France's joint army corps with Germany.
