A former Air Force sergeant charged with child abuse goes on trial in October in 2nd District Court.

Douglas C. Cox, 24, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the third-degree felony child-abuse charge. Trial is scheduled Oct. 14, but defense attorney Randy Richards indicated he's working on a plea agreement with prosecutors.Cox is charged with shaking his 3-month-old son Kelly on Dec. 5, resulting in brain damage and retinal bleeding that will leave the baby permanently blind.

Cox was a sergeant at Hill Air Force Base at the time and took the baby to the base hospital the next day, according to court records. Doctors transferred Kelly to Primary Children's Medical Center.

Doctors there discovered the baby had three fractured ribs, two leg fractures and evidence of previous shaking incidents, according to court records.

Cox has since left the Air Force and is living in Georgia.
