A a new state has been created within a state in southern Utah, albeit it is unofficial.
A 576 square-mile geographical area in Garfield County has been dubbed a "New State of Art" because of its popular interest to artists.Promoters say the "new state" was formed by declaration with a "tongue-in-cheek" document composed by Robert Matheny and his friends in San Diego. It contains signatures of supporters of the concept, which proposes to develop and advance arts in the area.
Members of the group have pledged to use their talents and interest in the arts to assist and benefit the community's art and cultural goals. They also want to assist the Escalante Public Library with its collection and art gallery.
Matheny reported the "new state" was formed between Escalante and Boulder because it includes some of the nation's most beautiful scenery.
The San Diego group has vacationed in Utah for many years. Matheny reported the members love the outdoors, are avid hikers and are enthusiastic promoters of the geographical wonders of the area.
