Howard Rollins, a detective on CBS' "In the Heat of the Night," says his real-life run-ins with the law have made him a better actor.
He spent about a month in jail for driving under the influence and reckless driving. He was released June 16.He told a Rotary Club in Conyers, Ga., Wednesday that he used drugs and alcohol "to level out the highs and lows" in his life.
"I now have found other ways to try to make my situation work," he said. He said his experiences made him a better actor.
