Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II said Saturday he is engaged to Anne Elizabeth Kelly, a member of his Washington staff.

No wedding date has been set, the eldest son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy said in a statement from his office.Kennedy, 40, is divorced from his first wife, Sheila Rauch, and is seeking an annulment of their marriage from the Roman Catholic Church. The couple have twin sons, Matthew and Joe, 12.

Spokesman Brian O'Connor said he did not know how the engagement would affect the couple's work relationship. They have been dating for about three years.

Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he and his second wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, were delighted by their nephew's engagement.

"We've gotten to know Beth over the past few years and are enormously fond of her, and we love Joe very much," the senator said in a statement Saturday.

Joseph Kennedy, D-Mass., was elected to Congress in 1986 and chairs the Subcommittee on Consumer Credit and Insurance of the House Banking Committee.

Kelly, 36, met Kennedy at Citizens Energy Corp., a non-profit oil company he established to provide low-cost heating fuel for the poor.
