University of Hawaii baseball coach Les Murakami says he is ready to leave the Western Athletic Conference if the WAC requires UH to subsidize travel for conference baseball teams.
The proposal made by San Diego State will be discussed during the WAC's summer meetings, which open today in Denver.Murakami said he sees no problem with becoming an independent.
UH interim athletic director Hugh Yoshida doesn't think it will go that far. He said UH has worked out several compromises that could make everyone happy.
"It's ridiculous," Murakami said of the travel proposal. "We travel more than anyone else and no one pays for us. We make four trips to the mainland each year. Each WAC team makes only one trip (to Hawaii).
"If they can't afford, it, they should get out," he said.
Every team in the conference should be treated the same, Murakami said.
"Why should we pay for their travel when no one pays for our travel?" he asked.
