SHARE BYU’S KALJURAND WINS STAN BATES AWARD

Hawaii placekicker Jason Elam and Brigham Young track athlete Anu Kaljurand were named winners of the 13th annual Stan Bates Award, the Western Athletic Conference announced.

The award is presented to one male and one female athlete in the WAC in honor of former league commissioner Stan Bates, with criteria for selection based on athletic and academic achievement. Recipients are awarded a $2,000 postgraduate scholarship.Kaljurand, a native of Estonia, carries a 3.81 GPA with a major in Russian and will complete her degree in August. She was the 1992 NCAA heptathlon champion, and she has won seven titles in the WAC indoor and outdoor track and field championships, including the long jump and hurdles. She represented Estonia in the 1992 Summer Olympics.
