We need the superconducting super collider project. If we wait for the deficit to come under control first, we may never have it.
Common sense dictates that the study of the basic nature of matter and energy could help us develop new pollution-free energy resources such as fusion power.Perhaps of a more speculative nature is the potential breaking of the speed-of-light barrier. With the super collider, it might be possible to create faster-than-light tachyon particles and also explore higher dimensions that have been found feasible mathematically.
Future manned spaceflight to the stars is one speculation and is still science fiction at present. If not manned spaceflight, faster-than-light communication might be possible. Perhaps we will discover advanced civilizations in the universe.
We cannot afford to ignore basic research.
