Kevin Costner has agreed to play a supporting role in "The War," Universal Pictures' drama about Vietnam veterans returning home from that conflict.

It will be directed by Jon Avnet, on his first assignment since "Fried Green Tomatoes," from a script by Kathy McWorter for Island Pictures. Costner will join the production on completing his current movie, "Wyatt Earp.""The War" is set in Mississippi in the early '70s involving two groups of kids who wage their own little war over a fort in a treehouse. Costner plays the pacifist father of one of the youngsters, played by child star Elijah Wood.
