A recent churchwide United Methodist survey finds that members consider a caring attitude the most important attribute of a pastor and the ability to preach well as the most desirable skill.

Also, the 758 members surveyed consider cooperation and honesty as well as skills in management and pastoral care to be essential qualities of effective pastors. The survey by the denomination's General Council on Ministries and St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City sought to help church leaders understand what lay people consider key elements of effective pastoral leadership.
