Robert B. Smith, vice president for academic affairs at Weber State University, will become the university's first provost on July 1.

In his new position, Smith will coordinate responsibilities shared by several vice presidents for educational activities such as student advising, international education and remedial education.Smith also will retain his responsibility for academic affairs.

Smith joined Weber State as vice president in 1981 after 20 years as a faculty member and dean at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He served as acting president of Weber State in 1985.
