Utah weather highlights

JUNE 2-3: A wild frontal passage with strong thunderstorms, a tornado and hail hit much of Utah. The heart of the Wasatch Front got hit hard, especially Davis, Weber and Morgan counties. A tornado hit the Center Street Park in North Salt Lake about 5:20 p.m. June 2. Everyone took cover before the tornado struck the ball field. The tornado was on the ground for less than five minutes, with two people receiving puncture wounds from flying debris. Several vehicles had windows blown out, and a couple of trees were uprooted.

Lots of hail fell in Davis County, mainly in Bountiful, North Salt Lake, Woods Cross, Centerville and Farmington, ranging from one-fourth to about an inch in diameter. It was up to 6 inches deep in Woods Cross.

Some rainfall amounts (in inches): Mountain Green, Morgan County, 3.80; Nordic Valley, 2.60; Liberty, 2.28; Bountiful, 1.06; and Coalville, 0.79. Three inches of snow fell at Snowbird and 4-inches at Alta.

JUNE 5-8: Another wet storm lingered over the state, depositing copious amounts of water in some northern Utah areas. Lots of pea- to marble-size hail fell in the Perry, Willard and Brigham City areas during the early morning hours of the 6th, causing damage to sweet/sour cherries and apricots in Perry. Cedar Breaks, Iron County, and Alta recorded 12 inches of snow. Some rainfall amounts in inches: Ben Lomond Peak, 8.80; Nordic Valley, 3.84; Alta, 2.91; Liberty, 3.76; Pleasant Grove, 1.04; Midway, 1.11; and Brigham City, 2.07.

Hail again fell in several areas of the state. The hills just west of Vernal were white.

JUNE 20-22: Lots of thunderstorms with microbursts. Lightning struck a motor home on the afternoon of the 20th 10 miles south of Beaver. It melted the antenna, blew out all the tires and did substantial damage to the vehicle. No one was injured but damage totaled approximately $2,500.
