WEST BOUNTIFUL COURSE EXPANDS

SHARE WEST BOUNTIFUL COURSE EXPANDS

Since opening nine new holes earlier this year, the West Bountiful Golf Course has seen its business more than double.

Part of that has to do with the dissatisfaction of many Salt Lake golfers over the recent implementation of a new reservation system and fee increase. Golfers have happily discovered it's only about 15 minutes from downtown Salt Lake to West Bountiful. They're also finding a fun course that's neither overly challenging nor too easy and has improved immensely in recent years.

The new nine was designed by local golf architect Bill Neff, but the West Bountiful golf board made sure he didn't make it too fancy to go with the old, simpler nine. They wanted a course that is playable and not a grind like so many new courses these days.

The result is a fairly wide-open course with some hazards here and there, reminding one of a Murray Parkway or perhaps Park Meadows without all the sand, water and condos.

The old nine and the new nine are intertwined nicely with the old 1, 2 and 3 holes joining six new holes on the front as 1, 8 and 9.

No. 10 is the old No. 4 and 11, 12 and 13 are three new holes in a wetlands area, southwest of the original nine. No. 11 is a short par-3 over a lake that can range anywhere from 75 to 150 yards long. The next two holes are lay-up holes for some golfers with the 356-yard 13th hole requiring a longer second shot than first for many.

The final five holes are the same as the original course, only now they're numbered 14 through 18. The last hole is a birdie-able par 5 from the whites and par 4 from the blues.

West Bountiful may be one of the most organized courses around when it comes to meeting the needs of its various clientele.

A ladies association plays Tuesday mornings and evenings, the men's association plays Wednesday evenings, while the seniors play Monday and Wednesday mornings. Also junior players are afforded special rates for certain hours on Mondays and Thursdays.

Don't despair about all that action because the course isn't quite yet bulging at the seams. Early afternoons remain a good time to get on as well as Mondays.
