An afternoon fire gutted an east Central City garage Wednesday, spewing thick smoke over the neighborhood and causing at least $10,000 worth of damage to the structure and its contents.

Donna Johnson walked with Salt Lake City Battalion Chief Bruce McGill through an alley at 1053 Fuller Ave. to see her blackened garage, formerly used to store theater equipment. Johnson said she and her husband, David, operate a freelance stage business and had recently moved their lighting equipment to a job in Ogden. The remaining equipment was destroyed by the fire.Fire crews received the call at 1:04 p.m. and doused the blaze within 12 minutes. An investigator was on the scene Wednesday to determine the cause.
