Ferris E. Groll, a 27-year police veteran who served nine years as Logan police chief, has been appointed to the No. 2 position in the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Groll, 51, replaces Brant L. Johnson, who retired July 31, said DPS Director Doug Bodrero. Also sworn in to a new post Tuesday during ceremonies in Salt Lake was Richard A. Greenwood, 43, a 16-year Utah Highway Patrol veteran who assumes the position of superintendent of the UHP following the retirement of Duane Richens last May.

Groll started with the Logan police department in 1961 and was appointed chief in 1979. He retired in 1988 and went to work for the Rocky Mountain Information Network, a clearing house for law enforcement information, in Phoenix, Ariz.

"Along with bringing a wealth of experience to the department, Ferris shares the values and visions of the Leavitt administration," Bodrero said.

Greenwood has worked for the UHP since 1976 and served 10 years as a trooper in the Weber County area. He has also worked as an accident reconstruction specialist and as director of the department's Protective Services and Executive Protection section.
