In-line rollerskating, once an obscure off-season training exercise for hockey players, is the hottest fitness activity in the nation, according to research from the National Sporting Goods Association. In-line skating is a fashionable, trendy way to socialize and enjoy the outdoors, while providing excellent aerobic conditioning, says the association.

Last year more than 7 million people participated in this sport (compared to 3.6 million in 1990). Although the majority of participants are 34 or younger, in-line skating appeals to both sexes, with 53 percent of the skaters being male and 47 percent being female.
