Judge approves NFL settlement

MINNEAPOLIS - A federal judge on Friday gave final approval to a revised NFL free agency settlement that had been reached by players and owners earlier in the year.

In an expected move, U.S. District Judge David Doty approved the settlement that was modified to reflect a collective bargaining agreement reached in May. The settlement approved by Doty set up the NFL's new free agency system.

Bullets, T'wolves swap players

LANDOVER, Md. - With forward Larry Stewart expected to miss six to eight weeks after breaking a bone in his right foot, the Washington Bullets on Friday traded the rights to second-round draft pick Conrad McRae to the Minnesota Timberwolves for forward Tim Burroughs.

Burroughs, 6-8, played in Spain last year. He was the Timberwolves' second-round draft pick in 1992 out of Jacksonville. The 6-9 McRae, who played at Syracuse, recently signed to play this season in Turkey.

Reds acquire Howard to complete deal

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Reds on Friday acquired switch-hitting outfielder Thomas Howard from the Cleveland Indians to complete Tuesday's trade that sent first baseman Randy Milligan to Cleveland.

Howard batted .291 against right-handers this year for the Indians. He had an overall .236 average with three home runs and 23 runs batted in during 74 games.

USU's Eustachy may be sued by Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Idaho is considering legal action against former men's basketball coach Larry Eustachy, who hasn't paid a $10,000 buyout clause in his contract.

Eustachy left to become head coach at Utah State at Logan, Utah. Payment was due July 1, because he left Idaho with one year left on his contract.

Eustachy didn't return telephone calls from the Associated Press Thursday seeking comment.

No American Taekwondo champs thus far

NEW YORK - Mikkael Meloul of France beat Victor Estrada of Mexico on Friday night to win the men's middleweight title at the World Taekwondo Championships at Madison Square Garden.

Se Jin Park of South Korea won the men's lightweight division, while Javier Argudo of Spain won the men's flyweight division.

Eun Sun Park of South Korea claimed the women's middleweight title. Jesus Santolana of Spain was the women's lightweight champ. Su Mu You of South Korea won the women's flyweight title.

Cougar Club kickoff set for Sept. 2

Sept. 2, the Cougar Club is kicking off the 1993 football season in style. The club's annual "Meet the Football Team" Watermelon Bust will be held at Cougar Stadium, with activities beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The activity will be a great way for Cougar fans to express their support for the team before they leave for their Sept. 4 season opener against the New Mexico Lobos. BYU football fans will also hear from Head Coach LaVell Edwards and the team captains, who will preview the upcoming season.

Along with other events, the coaching staff will introduce all of the players, and team members will be available for autographs after the program. Free BYU football posters will be given to the first 500 families.

Following the program, delicious Green River watermelon and cantaloupe, provided by club member Darrel Ross, will be enjoyed by everyone.

The "Meet the Team Watermelon Bust" is an activity sponsored by the Cougar Club for its members and their guests.

Roller hockey playoffs getting under way

Roller Hockey International playoffs begin tonight with the Calgary Rad'z visiting the Vancouver Voodoo. Postseason play continues Tuesday with the Connecticut Coasters at the Anaheim Bullfrogs and the Oakland Skates at the St. Louis Vipers. On Friday, the Toronto Planets will play the L.A. Blades.

Annual Aggie Auction tonight

LOGAN - More than $80,000 worth of items will be on sale tonight at Utah State's 10th annual Aggie Auction.

The evening begins with at 6 p.m with a buffet dinner and the silent auction, which will go throughout the evening. Admission is $15 per person, $25 per couple and $100 for a table of eight. The auction will be held in the Taggert Student Center.

Among items for sale are an autographed basketball from the 1993 Chicago Bulls, a trip to the 1994 Super Bowl in Atlanta, a VIP package to a Colorado Rockies game, two Polaris snowmobiles, Merlin Olsen's game jersey from the Los Angeles Rams, plus artwork, furniture, auto supplies, etc.
