As Utahns Against Hunger prepares for its 12th Share the Harvest, many Utah families have experienced their poorest year in recent history. They've faced housing shortages, and an estimated 235,000 Utahns live below the federal poverty line.
The state's gardeners are being asked to help their neighbors in need by sharing their extra produce, which will be distributed at 14 sites throughout the state, including four in Salt Lake County.Volunteers and staff will distribute food packets and information on other community resources that can help people in need. Last year, they distributed 4,900 such packages.
Salt Lake County will distribute food on Sundays, Aug. 29, Sept. 5 and 12 from 1-3 p.m. at Utahns Against Hunger offices, 845 W. 100 South; Westvale Presbyterian Church, 3610 S. 4400 West; St. Therese's Catholic Church, 112 S. Allen (off Center St. at 7800 South in Midvale); and at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1740 S. 500 East.
Distribution in other communities takes place in September. To find out the locations or questions about volunteering and giving or receiving donations, call UAH at 328-2561 or 1-800-453-3663.
