Mathew Croft will present a horn recital this evening at 7:30 in Steinway Hall, 156 S. Main. He will perform the Beethoven Horn Sonata, the Saint-Saens Romance, and the Brahms Horn Trio. He will be joined by pianist Jeffrey Price and violinist Victoria Ferris. Admission is $2, $1 for students and senior citizens.
Croft began playing horn at the age of 11 in the Utah public school system. He began private studies four years later with members of the Utah Symphony Horn Section and has performed with the Salt Lake Symphony, Mormon Youth Symphony, Utah Symphony and the University of Utah Philharmonia.Jeffrey Price, a native of Salt Lake City, studied piano, composition and conducting at the University of Utah. Last year, his second string quartet was premiered by the Muir String Quartet in Salt Lake City.
Victoria Ferris, a two-time "Salute to Youth" soloist and a multiple Utah State Fair Music Competition winner, currently studies with Utah Symphony associate concertmaster Gerald Elias, and will be entering BYU in the fall.
- PARK CITY International Music Festival plays James Drew's world premiere "Book of Lights" for viola, clarinet, cello and piano tonight at 8 p.m. at the Park City Community Church. Drew has also composed for the Guarneri String Quartet, the Mirecourt Trio, Yale University and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others. Works by Schubert, Mozart and Hummel are also on the program.
On Aug. 25, 8 p.m., at the Park City Community Church, the Park City International Music Festival will present Beethoven's Sonata for Violin & Piano, Mozart's Piano Quartet and Schubert's Quintet in C major featuring cellists Terry King and Ellen Bridger.
"Viva! Vivaldi!!" is the third in the festival's chamber orchestra series Aug. 27, 8 p.m., at the Park City Education Center. Featured are violinists Charles Libove, leader of the legendary Beaux-Art Quartet and currently Director of Strings at New York University, and Charles Castleman, professor of violin at Eastman School of Music, accompanied by the orchestra in selections from the "Seasons" for violin and orchestra and additional works by Antonio Vivaldi. Admission to all concerts is $12 ($10 for students and senior citizens).
- THE FOLK ARTS PROGRAM of the Utah Arts Council closes its summer concert series Monday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. with performances from three groups participating in the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Project. Rev. France Davis and the Rev. James Gates of the Calvary Baptist Church open the concert with African-American hymns and chants and will perform one of the oldest forms of African-influenced music that is still sung in America.
The ancient style of Hawaiian hula will be presented by Keola Ohumukini and Noelani Parson Tobler at 7:30 p.m. This ancient form of hula, performed only to the accompaniment of drumming and chanting, is seldom seen outside the islands.
The Arrambide family, formerly of the Andes Mountains of Peru, will perform Andean music. Noted for its soulful melodies and intricate rhythms, Andean music is representative of the region's Incan heritage. The Arrambide family will present Native American melodies and philosophies in both Spanish and Quechua. This concert is at the Chase Home in Liberty Park and is free to the public.
- HENRY MANCINI joins the Utah Symphony on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 7:30 p.m., at Deer Valley in a concert benefitting the U.S. Ski Team. Mancini, an avid skier and four-time Academy Award winner, will conduct his Oscar-winning compositions including "The Pink Panther" and selected ballads such as "Moon River" and "Days of Wine and Roses." Also featured is the overture from the Broadway musical "Tommy" composed by Peter Townshend, "A Whole New World," from the film "Aladdin," and "Beauty and the Beast," both composed by Alan Menken. Tickets are $17.50 for general admission.
- MAYDE ROBERTSON will perform a piano concert on Friday, Aug. 27, 7:30 p.m., at the Temple Square Assembly Hall. Robertson, a graduate of Brigham Young University in piano performance, will present the music of Bach, Liszt, Chopin, Scriabin, Haydn and Barber. She has performed throughout the United States, Mexico and Russia.
The Lund Family Strings, whose eight members range in ages from 7 to 18, will play at the Temple Square Assembly Hall Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The ensemble will perform music by Vivaldi, Faure, Heifetz, Elgar, Rachmaninoff, Wieniawski and Malotte as well as solos with piano accompaniment. The Lund ensemble has performed for more than a decade and have studied music since their early years.
The Temple Square Concert Series at the Assembly Hall is free and open to those ages 8 and older.
- THE UTAH SYMPHONY salutes the Russian musical legacy in four concerts featuring Tchaikovsky's "1812" Overture with live cannons and the Utah Symphony Chorus conducted by Robert Henderson at Abravanel Hall, Friday, Aug. 27, 8 p.m.; Deer Valley, Saturday, Aug. 28, 7:30 p.m.; Snowbird Center, Sunday, Aug. 29, 3:30 p.m.; SCERA Shell, Orem, Monday, Aug. 30, 8:15 p.m. Also appearing on the program is Prokofiev's Waltz Suite, "Galitsin's Journey" and "Triumphal March" by Modest Mussorgsky and Aram Khachaturian's Suite from the ballet "Spartacus."
Tickets are $13 to $19 for Abravanel Hall, $16 to $31 at Deer Valley or $18 on the day of the concert, $16 to $21 at Snowbird or $18 the day of the show, $8 for adults, $5 for students and $19 for a family pass at SCERA Shell.
