Director John Woo, promoting the opening of his first major Hollywood film, the Jean-Claude Van Damme action movie "Hard Target," says he makes hero-type action movies because of the violence he saw in real life while growing up in Hong Kong.

"When I was a child, I had seen too much violence in my life," he told the Boston Herald. He said during the Hong Kong riots of the 1960s, "a lot of people had been shot" right in front of his family's door.
