Vandals destroyed property worth about $25,000 by throwing it in a pool at Murray High School during an early morning break-in Saturday.
Police said the vandals entered the school, 5300 S. State, through a skylight above the school's swimming pool about 5 a.m. At least one of them jumped from the skylight opening into the pool, said Sgt. Gerry Christensen. At least two others tied a rope to the skylight and lowered themselves down, he said."They threw everything that wasn't nailed down into the swimming pool," Christensen said. One of the school's custodians found computers, chairs, trophies and custodial equipment floating in the pool Saturday morning and called police.
While police have few leads, they do have fingerprints and blood samples. One of the vandals was cut fairly seriously, Christensen said. Police have been contacting local hospitals for information about anyone treated for that type of injury.
Christensen said it's not the first time people have broken into the school through the skylight.
"We've been broken into before, but the kids would just go swimming," Tranter said. "It's the first time anybody's done any real damage. It's not a good way to start the year."
