Kris Rutford successfully defended his title in the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim on Saturday, covering the 28.5-mile course in 7 hours, 26 minutes and 30 seconds.

Rutford, 32, of Lincoln, Neb., led a field of nine swimmers from five countries in the race that started and finished at Battery Park. Swimmers went up the East River, across the Harlem River and down the Hudson River.Art Coleman, of New Rochelle, N.Y., finished second, 10:54 behind Rutford. Marcella MacDonald, 29, of Manchester, Conn., was the first female finisher and third overall in 7:38:05.
