San Diego State unveiled its new strategy with Marshall Faulk on Saturday as the junior running back caught a 40-yard touchdown pass on the first play of an intrasquad scrimmage.
Faulk, one of the early Heisman Trophy favorites, caught a swing pass from David Lowery and ran down the left sideline. He caught two passes for 60 yards and rushed six times for 11 yards. The Aztecs plan to throw more to Faulk this season to reduce wear and tear. Faulk, the two-time national rushing leader, has missed nearly six full games in two seasons because of injuries.
Lowery completed 11 of 27 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. Redshirt freshman Billy Blanton was 6-for-10 for 70 yards and one touchdown, with one interception. Freshman Kevin McKechnie was 11-for-17 for 204 yards and one touchdown.
Darnay Scott caught four passes for 102 yards, including an 80-yard scoring pass from Lowery.
The backups for Faulk and Lowery were on the sidelines. Junior quarterback Tim Gutierrez hasn't recovered fully from offseason back surgery on a herniated disk. And junior running back Wayne Pittman was held out because a teammate fell Friday on his left leg, which was badly broken late last season.
