Calvin Peete, who started play Saturday three strokes out of the lead, withdrew from the $500,000 GTE Northwest Classic after shooting a 2-over-par 74.
In a post-round television interview, Peete said PGA Tour official Bryan Naugle cautioned him for playing slow.Peete said the warning was racially motivated and "unjustified."
Naugle said his comments were warranted.
"Our officials treat everybody the same, and I'm sorry he feels there was racial prejudice in this case," Naugle said in a statement. "He was out of position on the golf course and was being timed. I informed him of this during the round and asked him to come to the PGA trailer afterwards to discuss it. He refused to come to the trailer and talk to me about it."
Dave Stockton led the tournament with a 36-hole score of 133, nine shots ahead of Peete.
