I would like to answer the article by Rep. Karen Shepherd titled "Budget plan will create a prosperous future" in the Aug. 8 edition of the Deseret News.
She is correct when she said that the top priority of voters was deficit reduction and reducing the national debt. During her campaign she said many times that she would not vote for a tax increase for at least two years. She was going to reduce the deficit through spending cuts. That is exactly opposite of what she voted for. She voted for taxes retroactive to Jan. 1, 1993, and most of the spending cuts later. The only possible explanation is that she believes she is smarter than the people of Utah and knows what is best for us.
She was sent to Washington to represent us. If the people do not have enough information to make an intelligent decision, it is her duty to inform us on such important topics.
The people of Utah were very informed on this subject and had spoken loud and clear. An overwhelming majority of people in Utah's 2nd District were opposed to the Clinton plan and Shepherd knew it. With total disregard to the wishes of the people, she voted for the Clinton plan.
She held the balance of power. If she would have voted against the plan, it would have been defeated and spending cuts would have been the mandate in Washington. The costs associated with holding a recall election are high but would, in this case, be cost-effective.
