A child psychiatrist was convicted of faking research on an antidepressant used for treating obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Dr. Barry Garfinkel of the University of Minnesota was found guilty Thursday on five counts of fraud and making false statements. Each carries up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. No sentencing date was set.The 46-year-old Garfinkel, a nationally known authority on teen suicide, could also lose his medical license.

Prosecutors contended Garfinkel falsified his research into the drug Anafranil to advance his academic career. He reported on patient visits that never took place or were conducted by someone with no medical training.
