Utah Weather Highlights:

DEC. 11-12: Strong southerly winds developed in the western valleys on the evening of the 11th ahead of a Pacific cold front. Some wind gusts: West Valley, 41 mph; La Verkin, 45 mph; Cedar City, 49; Wendover, 58; St. George, 69; Tooele, 60; and Salt Lake City, 41.

Vigorous cold front moved into northwestern Utah in early morning hours of the 12th, with heavy rains/thunderstorms, and the mix rapidly turned to snow. Weber, Davis and Salt Lake counties and adjacent mountains were hardest hit. Water content in snow was unusually high. Weight of the snow broke tree limbs, causing numerous and sometimes long-lasting power outages in the Salt Lake Valley. Some snowfall totals (in inches): Alta, 25; Snowbird, 23; Holladay and Sandy, 8-10; Capitol Hill, 11; Olympus Cove, 13; Brian Head, 24; Tooele, 4; Sugar House, 9; Millcreek, 10; and Hogle Zoo, 12. Water amounts, in inches, included: Alta, 1.68; Hogle Zoo, 1.50; Olympus Cove, 1.64; Centerville, 0.92; Ogden, 0.70; and Brighton, 1.30.

DEC. 15-17: Another storm moved through the state, producing light to moderate amounts of snow in the valleys and somewhat larger amounts in the mountains. Some amounts, in inches: Alta, 13; Snowbird, 10; Brian Head, 15; South Jordan, 7; Holladay, 3; Orem, 4; Trenton, 5; and Orderville, Kane County, 5.

SOME DECEMBER MONTHLY PRECIPITATION TOTALS (in inches): Alta, 3.95 inches (58 percent of normal); Blanding, 0.42 (36 percent); Brigham City, 0.53 (29 percent); Bryce Canyon, 0.41 (36 percent); Holladay, 1.29 (68 percent); Kanab, 0.66 (53 percent); Provo-BYU, 1.24 (74 percent); Heber City, 0.32 (20 percent); Richmond, 0.89 (55 percent); Tooele, 1.46 (99 percent); and Zion National Park, 1.01 (79 percent).
