RACE. Gate Mania will be held Jan. 29 at Snowbird. This will be a race will be for alpine skiers and snowboarders. Gates will be set at 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the race hill by Mid Gad lift. Fee is $35 and includes an all-day lift pass, T-shirt and chance to ski the gates as many times as you want. 583-6281.

SKI SCHOOL. Salt Lake County Recreation will be registering for the Jr. High After School Program. Offered to Granite and Jordan junior high students. Ski one day a week, after school, at Brighton for four weeks. Fee is $65 and includes 2-hour lesson, 1-hour free ski and transportation. 468-2560.

CROSS COUNTRY. Hess Fitness Center at Hill air Force Base and Ogden Golden Spike Striders will hold the 1st Cross Country Ski Volkssport at Hubert Golf Course on Jan. 29. Start 10 a.m., finish 4 p.m. There will also be a 10-mile walking course. 777-4617 or 782-8580.

LESSONS. Salt Lake Community College is sponsoring pitching lessons for female softball pitchers. Lessons will be held at SLCC's campus at 1700 S. 200 East. Runs for four weeks on Wednesdays - Feb. 2-23. One hour class - 6:30, 7:30 or 8:30 p.m. Fee $27. 967-4083.


LEAGUE. Central City Community Center is hosting winter women's and men's basketball leagues starting Jan. 15-16. To register call 538-2062.

LEAGUE. Registrations are being taken for the Northwest Multi-Purpose Center's men's and women's basketball league. Center is at 1300 W. 300 North. Fee is $225 per team. Runs for 10 weeks starting Jan. 17. 596-0072.


TRYOUTS. The East-West Soccer Ambassadors will be holding tryout at the Salt Lake Indoor Soccer Center on Jan. 23 between 3 and 5 p.m. Players are asked to bring their own soccer ball, water and a $15 registration fee for the clinic/tryout. WALLYBALL. Alta Canyon Sports Center is starting a drop-in league for all levels of play. This is on-going event. Informal leagues on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. and Friday at 9 p.m. Free for members, $4 for non-members. Structured league on Saturdays and Wednesdays, with round-robin and double elimination tournaments every 6 weeks. Saturday formal leagues start Jan. 15, March 5 and April 23; Wednesday formal leagues in Nov., Jan. and March. REI CLINICS - On Jan. 18, Pam Foyster will present a slide presentation and lecture on the prevention, basic diagnosis and treatment of frostbite, hypothermia - prevention, recognition and treatment . . . On Jan. 25, experts from the utah Avalanche Forecast Center will present an advanced avalanche clinic focusing on how to determine whether or not a slope is safe to ski or snowboard. DISABLE PROGRAMS. Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation is pleased to offer recreation and leisure experiences to individuals with physical and mental disabilities. Adapted programs are designed to meet the physical and social needs of each participant. The objectives are to teach fundamentals of sports with emphasis on fun, cooperation, fair play and team building skills. 561-0075.

RACQUETBALL. Alta Canyon Sports Center is offering a free drop-in racquetball class for players ages 8-14 on Fridays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. 942-2582.

WEIGHT LIFTING. Alta Canyon Sports is offering Teen Weight Training Workouts Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-6 p.m., and on Saturday 10-11 a.m. Coaching provided. Fee is $1.50 for area residents, $2.50 for others. 942-2582.
