Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah, has been appointed to the House Arms Control Observer Group by House Speaker Thomas Foley.

That group consults with the administration on legislation and treaties affecting weapons of mass destruction.It is working on legislation needed to implement the new Chemical Weapons Convention. Tooele Army Depot in Hansen's district stores 43 percent of U.S. chemical arms.

Hansen said, "With North Korea, Iran and other less-developed and politically unstable nations obtaining weapons of mass destruction, we must do all we can to protect the U.S. vital national security interests and to vigorously promote nonproliferation."
