The Hillcrest High boys basketball team opened the Region 2 season with an upset win at fifth-ranked Brighton. But the Huskies second straight upset bid was thwarted by No. 1 Alta Friday, as the Hawks remained unbeaten (12-0, 2-0) with a 58-50 victory.
Alta led just 43-41 at the end of three quarters, but the Hawks outscored the Huskies 15-9 in the final period. Taylor Wagner led all scorers with 21 points, while Adam Sharp had 17. Brad Greaves netted 16 in the losing cause for Hillcrest (8-2, 1-1).The Hawks are now the only unbeaten team remaining in class 5A, as previously unblemished Mountain View lost to rival Orem Friday night.

Layton 71, Bonneville 68
At Layton, Chad King exploded for 28 points to lead the Lancers (4-7, 1-0) to the win in overtime. Tyson Murdock added 16 for Layton. The Lakers fell to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in the region.
Northridge 70, Weber 51
At Northridge, Casey Smith scored 23 points and Brian Blood added 15 as the Knights improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the region. Scott Harrop had 14 in the losing cause for the Warriors.
Roy 66, Clearfield 45
At Roy, the Royals (1-0, 5-6) opened region play with a victory over the Falcons (0-1, 3-8) behind K.C. McQueen's 19 points. Troy Schiffman added 17 points for Roy. Clearfield's Aaron Smith and Scott Moser had eight point apiece.
Bountiful 63, Skyline 56
At Bountiful, the Braves improved to 2-0 in the region with a victory over the Eagles. Dave Hibbert had 18 points for No. 4 Bountiful, while Brett Allen added 13. Dave Johnson netted 16 for Skyline.
Highland 58, Cottonwood 50
At Cottonwood, Todd Christensen scored 15 points as the Rams evened their region mark at 1-1. Cottonwood's Kevin Linkous had 20 points to lead all scorers.
Viewmont 61, Davis 37
At Viewmont, Jeremy Martin scored 23 points to lead the Vikings (1-0, 9-2) to a league-opening victory. Alex Jensen added 15 points for No. 2 Viewmont. Greg Emery was the high scorer for the Darts (0-1, 7-4) with eight points.
Taylorsville 75, Granger 40
At Granger, the Warriors outscored the Lancers 31-8 in the final quarter to put the game away. Taylorsville (6-5, 1-0) was led by Greg Blake's 28 points, while Matt Pinkney added 16. Andy Butterfield had 14 for the Lancers (3-8, 0-1).
Hunter 74, Kearns 41
At Kearns, Tony Sweat scored 24 points to lead the Wolverines to the region-opening win over the Cougars. Brett Lambourne had 14 for Kearns (2-8, 0-1).
American Fork 62, Brighton 56
At American Fork, the Cavemen handed the fifth-ranked Bengals their second region loss in as many tries. Jason Ingersol scored 15 points to lead American Fork (1-1, 6-6), while teammate Paul Poulsen added 12. Robbie Yates led Brighton with 20 points.
Orem 43, Mountain View 36
At Mountain View, the Tigers knocked their crosstown rivals out of the ranks of the unbeaten behind Terry Andersen's 13 points and Eric Crow's 12. Orem is now 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the region, while the Bruins are 12-1, 1-1.
Mountain Crest 76, Bear River 65
At Bear River, Dan Conger scored 26 points to lead the fifth-ranked Mustangs (8-3, 1-2) to the victory over the Bears. Bear River (2-9, 0-2) was led by Brian Graegger's 17 points.
Ogden 42, Logan 40
At Logan, the Tigers edged the Grizzlies behind Brent Moore's 16 points. Steve Smith scored 12 for Logan. Fourth-ranked Ogden is now 9-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Sky View 76, Ben Lomond 54
At Sky View, the Bobcats' balanced attack, with four players in double figures, was too much for the Scots. Sky View is now 2-0 in the region, while Ben Lomond fell to 2-1. Brandon Birch and Paul Watts netted 12 points each, while Daren Jackson and Ryan Robertson and 11 apiece for Sky View.
Murray 59, Jordan 50
At Jordan, the Spartans improved to 2-0 in the region (7-3 overall) behind 19 points from Brad Winget. Jordan (3-7, 0-2) was led by Matt Foulkes' 19 points.

At Cyprus, the third-ranked Titans, led by Ty Church's 22 points, downed the Pirates (2-9, 1-1). Greg Barratt added 15 points for Olympus (9-2, 2-0), while Chad Huntsman had 1 4 for Cyprus.

At Woods Cross, the Leopards opened region play with a victory behind 20 points by Kenny Klinger. East is now 3-8 overall and 1-0 in the region. Cody Malmrose had 14 points for the Wildcats (0-2, 2-9).
Pleasant Grove 68, Spanish Fork 59
At Spanish Fork, the Vikings evened their region mark at 1-1 behind Justin Wilkes' 17 points. Spanish Fork, which fell to 0-2 in league play, was paced by Jason Barney's 16.
Provo 50, Timpview 34
At Timpview, the Bulldogs downed their crosstown rivals behind Brian Paulsen's 16 points. B.J. Chandler added 14 for Provo (8-4, 2-0). Aaron Warner had a team-high 14 for the Thunderbirds (5-7, 1-1).
Payson 69, Springville 64
At Springville, the Red Devils' Jason Walker scored 25 points, but it wasn't enough as the Lions held on for the victory. Both teams are now 1-1 in region play.
Dixie, 72, Hurricane 52
At Dixie, Leon Reber scored 23 points to lead the Flyers (12-3, 1-0). Rock Jensen had 10 for the Tigers (5-8, 0-1).
Pine View 43, Cedar City 28
At Cedar City, the fourth-ranked Panthers downed the No. 3 Redmen in a defensive struggle. Ryan Lewis led Pine View (11-4, 1-0) with 12 points. Cedar City is now 10-4, 0-1.
Lehi 66, Park City 61
At Park City, the Pioneers improved to 3-0 in the region, while the Miners dropped to 0-3. Clint Christiansen had 22 points to lead all scorers for Park City.

At Carbon, Dolan Raby scored 16 points to lead the Dinosaurs to a league win over the Rabbis. Delta's Brian Kitchen scored a game-high 21 points.

At Richfield, the fifth-ranked Wildcats improved to 11-2 on the year behind 25 points by Ryan Oldroyd. Scott Cuff added 11 for Richfield, while Lane Thompson netted 17 for North Sanpete.

At Morgan, the Trojans improved to 7-1 overall with the victory. Matt McKee led all scorers with 22 points for Morgan.

At Juab, Jared Kiesel scored 22 points to lead the Cowboys to a road victory over the Wasps. J.C. Reid had 14 to lead Juab.

At South Summit, Robbie Maynes scored 35 points to lead the fourth-ranked Wildcats to the victory. Jay Woolstenhulme added 21 points and 11 assists for South Summit (7-1, 3-1). Ryan Newman and John Peterson scored 15 points each.

At Manti, the second-ranked Templars improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the region with the win. Dusty Cox had 15 points and Chris Nilsson had 12 for Manti. Courtney Richins scored 15 for North Summit.

At Valley, the top-ranked Buffaloes held on to nip Piute behind Tony Baird's 14 points. Piute's Garnet Hanson led all scorers with 16 points.

At Enterprise, Garrick Jones scored 25 points to lead Enterprise (7-3, 4-2) over Milford (1-10, 0-5). Rick Rose netted 13 for Milford.
