A Brigham Young University professor who intended to declare his candidacy for the 3rd Congressional District Thursday afternoon postponed his announcement.
Republican Brad Hainsworth said he wants to explore whether he has party and financial support. He announced his intentions next week."The last thing Republicans need right now is any kind of an intraparty split because, for the first time in four years, there is an opportunity to win this seat," he said.
Hainsworth, a communications professor, also wants to see if he'll be able to raise enough money to take on Rep. Bill Orton, D-Utah. The GOP nominee will have to compete with Orton dollar-for-dollar to win, he said.
Utah County Commissioner Gary Herbert and Emery County Commissioner Dixie Thompson have already declared their candidacies for the seat.
