United Parcel Service, United Way of Greater Salt Lake Area and Guadalupe Educational Programs joined forces to bring a $10,000 grant to Salt Lake City to help families with a history of poverty and illiteracy achieve self-sufficiency.
The grant is part of a nationwide program implemented by the UPS Foundation in 1984. Throughout the country, UPS district grant committees identify urgent community needs and recommend funding for organizations that can meet those needs.United Way will disperse the grant to Guadalupe to expand its home visitor program. Home visitors identify infants and toddlers in inner-city neighborhoods who are likely to fail in school without early education intervention. Visitors go to their homes and coach the parents - usually single mothers - in child development basics, nutrition and health care. They also teach parents ways to foster the child's physical, emotional and intellectual development.
