The club, which has 1,000 members in 46 states and 14 foreign countries, meets once a year for a "Marty Party" on the eighth president's birthday, Dec. 5, at which it holds a seance, dinner and gift exchange. It also puts out an annual newsletter, amiled Dec. 5. Write to Gary Holloway, 778 14th St., San Francisco, Calif. 94114, or call him at (415) 626-9373.Holloway, asked for one amazing fact about the one-term president, said the term "OK" originated in his 1840 re-election campaign with the slogan "He's O.K.," and abbreviation of his nickname, "Old Kinderhook," after his home town in upstate New York. Linguists hotly dispute the origin of "OK," many holding that it predates the 1840 campaign as an abbreviation for "oll korrect." In any event, every year at the seance they ask if he's OK, and he always says yes.
