A. These large brass iinstruments were being made during the 1820s in Europe. However, in 1835, a bass tuba was patented by the bandmaster Wilhelm Wieprecht and the instrument-maker Johann Gottfried Moritz. This instrument had a special new valve that thes two men also patented. The new valve was called a Berliner-Pumpe, and was a short valvee of large diameter. Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler were among the first composers to include passages for the tuba in major musical works.
