Joe Velarde, age 80, passed away Jan. 25, 1994, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Born June 30, 1913, in Pagosa Junction, Colorado, to Abraham and Estefana Atencio Velarde. Grew up in New Mexico and lived his adult life in Utah. Married Michelle DeHerrera in June 1936. Member, Roman Catholic Church. A miner for most of his life, but retired in the early '70's due to a medical disability. He was a foster grandparent at "Neighborhood House" and was very proud of his work with children. He was a loving parent, foster-parent, grandparent, and great-grandparent to his large family and the many young people who called him "Daddy Joe".Survived by: His children, Joseph Velarde, Roy Velarde, both Salt Lake City; "Teddy" Velarde, California; Carlota Velarde, Pennsylvania; Inez Rodriguez, Georgia Weicks, Estefana Velarde, and Elisa Little, all Salt Lake City; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Rosary and Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 29, 1994, 7 p.m., at Deseret Mortuary, 36 East 700 So., where friends may call one hour prior to Mass. Funeral directors, Deseret Mortuary.
