Trees need more than hugs. That is why tree professionals are invited to attend one of five tree-care workshops in February.

The Utah Community Forest Council and Utah State University Cooperative Extension are sponsoring workshops in the counties of Grand, Iron, Utah, Weber and Cache."These workshops provide basic and advanced up-to-date information on tree care to professionals," said Mike Kuhns, USU Extension forestry specialist. "These include arborists, groundskeepers, nurserymen and others who work with trees."

Landscape tree care is the main focus of the workshops. However, many of the topics to be covered apply to trees in any situation, he said.

Topics include practical tree physiology and anatomy, tree selection, planting and maintenance, tree health update and pruning and wounds.

The Utah Community Forest Council was organized as an educational, scientific and charitable nonprofit corporation in 1991. Its function is to foster sound arbori-cultural principles and practices in Utah's community forests and to improve Utah's urban environment by successfully establishing and maintaining trees, Kuhns said.

Pre-registration is $10 now and $15 after Feb. 11. All workshops begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.
