A routine traffic stop led to a chase early Friday on I-15 that reached speeds over 110 mph and resulted in the arrest of a 13-year-old Midvale boy.
Police attempted to stop a pickup truck in Lehi for speeding and a broken light at 1:10 a.m., Lehi Police Lt. Chad Smith said. Instead, the pickup sped up and passed through several red lights going at least 55 mph, he said. The chase moved onto I-15, with the truck going at least 110 mph, Smith said. The occupants, two boys, started throwing objects from inside the cab at the officer. Police later learned that one of the objects was a stolen gun, which had not been recovered Friday morning.
The truck exited the freeway about 10 minutes later at 9000 South in Sandy going 90 mph, Smith said. The vehicle struck the curb and blew out a tire. The boys drove on the rim for a short distance then attempted to flee on foot.
A Utah Highway Patrol trooper nabbed the Midvale boy, but the driver got away, Smith said. The boy identified the driver as a Sandy teen, but when authorities attempted to contact him, his parents said their son had been home all night, Smith said.
The truck was stolen in Sandy.
