I have read in the newspaper and listened to the news about stabbings and shootings happening frequently and for no other reason than to see who is the toughest guy or who shows the greatest force in settling a dispute. I never thought this would be happening in a city such as Salt Lake City.
The idea of night basketball has been great in keeping gangs off the streets. I applaud those who support a program like this, from the community leaders to the sponsors to the participants. Kids need to have something they can look forward to and to use their energy in productive ways. Hopefully, this positive effort will aid in building better self-esteem.Another way to help is to encourage businesses to hire young people for meaningful employment. I have a Deseret News paper route that keeps me busy after school, along with homework and friends. It teaches me to be responsible. I know my customers are counting on me to get the papers out on time and to give them good service. There aren't a lot of jobs available to a 14-year-old, but I have been delivering newspapers for four years. I'm glad the Newspaper Agency will give young kids a chance to develop their character and earn some spending money.
