STATS: Born Feb. 8, 1920, in Wallace, Idaho, as Julia Jean Mildred Frances Turner. Attended Hollywood (Calif.) High School. Married seven times; husbands included band leader Artie Shaw and actor Lex Barker. She has one daughter by her second husband, Stephen Crane.IN EARLY YEARS: Legend has it that she was discovered at age 16 while playing hooky from high school. Early publicists called her "The Sweater Girl." Turner made her debut in 1937's "A Star Is Born." Her career took off after she played a tragic role in 1941's "Ziegfeld Girl." Dramatic high points of her career were "The Postman Always Rings Twice" in 1946 and "Peyton Place" in 1957. "Peyton Place" was her only Academy Award nomination.

FAMOUS FOR: Her turbulent private life, which included the killing of her lover, hoodlum Johnny Stompanato, by her daughter Cheryl Crane in 1958; and her long career as a glamour girl, lasting into the 1970s.

IN RECENT YEARS: Turner got into TV, including a short-lived series "The Survivors," 1969-70, and a 1981 guest role in "Falcon Crest." She did occasional theater engagements. In 1992, her daughter revealed that Turner had been successfully treated for throat cancer. She lives in California.
