Stephanus (Steve) Asmus, age 81, died Monday, January 3, 1994 at Dixie Regional Medical Center.
He was born February 17, 1912 in Dortrecht, Holland to Cornelius and Jozina Von der Wetering Asmus. He married Melba Paxman and they were later divorced; Married Sylvia Rosenberg, later divorced; married Ruth Gehrke who preceded him in death; and he married Evelyn Alice Lape September 30, 1989 in Clearfield, Utah.Mr. Asmus came to America at the age of two and spent his early childhood in the Nibley Park area of Salt Lake City. His youth was spent as a caddie at the Nibley Golf Course. He loved to play golf. As a teenager, he was the first employee of Dee's Hamburgers. He served in the US Army during World War II and was discharged in 1944. He lived in Cedar City for 27 years where he served as an Iron County Commissioner, President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Exalted Ruler of Cedar City BPOE 1556 where he served also as State Chairman for two State Conventions.
He was President of the Bleachers Club and was very active in promoting scholarships for Southern Utah University. He was employed by the Utah Liquor Commission as an auditor and later as State Supervisor.
He retired in 1977 in Salt Lake City and moved to St. George in 1991. Steve loved fishing and playing golf, but most of all he loved his kids.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Surviving family members include his present wife, Evelyn, St. George, Utah; three stepsons: Terry Rosenberg, Santa Clara, Utah and Randy and Leigh Rosenberg of Las Vegas, Nevada; two brothers and three sisters: Woody Asmus, Florida; Norm Asmus, Sacramento, Calif.; Jane Prechtel, Oregon; Josephine Ohling, Pennsylvania; and Margie Mathews, Sandy, Utah.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 6, 1994 at 2 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive, where friends may call Wednesday, January 5, 1994 from 7-9 p.m. and again on Thursday from 12:45 - 1:45 p.m. prior to services. Entombment in the Wasatch Lawn Mausoleum, Garden of the Roses.
